Tourist information offices are located at international airports and at main centres throughout South Africa.
International air gateways
South Africa`s main airport, the Johannesburg International Airport, is 30 km from Johannesburg and 60 km from Pretoria. Airport buses to the SAA terminal run every 30 minutes and there are also services to and from Pretoria. Several hotels provide courtesy buses, taxis are plentiful and comparatively inexpensive although check the meter is running at the start of the journey. There are also international airports at Cape Town (about 20 km from the city) and Durban (16 km). Buses and taxis are also available.
International scheduled air services
South African Airways operates 19 flights a week from Heathrow Terminal 1 to South Africa, including at least daily services to Johannesburg, daily services to Cape Town.
British Airways also operates 19 flights a week from Heathrow to South Africa, again at least daily to Johannesburg and six times a week to Cape Town (not Mondays).
Virgin Atlantic operates daily between Heathrow and Johannesburg. Durban is now served with domestic add-on services, as are key points throughout South Africa.
SA Alliance Air has twice weekly services from from Heathrow Terminal 1 to Johannesburg, via Entebbe, Uganda and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. (Information correct at time of going to Press. Check with the airlines for the latest timetables.)
