There are in excess of 150 world-class backpacker lodges and hostels to be found throughout South Africa. They range in size from about 20 to 200 beds and offer a range of accommodation in either shared dorms or single, twin or double rooms.
The vast majority of the backpacker lodges and hostels are individually owned and operated and may belong to one of the two accommodation networks in the country, VIP Backpackers Resorts South Africa (VIP) being the largest and Hostelling International South Africa (HISA).
Backpacker accommodation can be found in the most rural of areas, tucked within a cane field, and within the most urban of areas, such as Soweto. Each lodge or hostel is unique in its style and atmosphere and offers a great atmosphere at an incredible price whilst providing a perfect place to meet other travellers.
