South Africa is history. It is thought that South Africa may well have been the Cradle of Humankind, that the first Hominids stood upright here perhaps 4-million years ago. And there is a marvelous continuity of occupation, as the descendents of South Africa's own First Peoples, the San hunter-gatherers, are still here. Scattered across veld and bush is the evidence of Stone Age and Iron Age, of ages when great cultures, from across the seas and from elsewhere in Africa, clashed. Here history lives in the different quarters in our cities, and in the countryside. Our history is part of our culture.
