Nobel Laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu described us as the "Rainbow Nation", and indeed, we are. Here is an extraordinary melting pot of peoples from many different parts of the world - at least a dozen major tribes of Bantu-speaking people from Africa, San descendents of the original inhabitants, Malay descendents of the slaves brought here by the Dutch, who themselves sailed in as the vanguard of a score of European nations, English, Scots, Irish and Welsh, German and Swedish, French, Italian, Greek and of course Portuguese. Then Chinese and Indians, Russians and Australians. Mosques and synagogues, Chinese and Hindu temples, Russian Orthodox and Presbytarian churches, stand cheek by jowl. We are all still here, come and meet us all.
