South Africa's history is very accessible. The Sterkfontein Caves and their environs near Johannesburg have now been declared a World Heritage Site, and this could well have been the Cradle of Humankind. Tours of Sterkfontein and many of the other sites here and around South Africa are available and at many different levels, from popular to academic. There are many popular battlefields tours covering the many different wars and conflicts, many of them combinations - see three wars in one day! Much of this is also available to the do-it-yourself historian, but remember, if you find yourself alone on a historical or archaeological site, what you see on the ground stays on the ground!
